Blaze Awards 2017 – 5th November 2017

Blaze Awards 2017

With an increase in numbers from last year, the Blaze Awards continues to be an unmissable date in the calendar and last Sunday at the Braid Hills Hotel was an opportunity to share player successes and awards, celebrate the memory of Bill McInnes, and start our new ‘Bill McInnes Volunteer of the Year Award’.

Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Alan McDonald, coach of the U18M and Senior Men’s Player for his continued dedication to the club and coaching over a number of years. Ally Reid (Senior Men’s Team Manager) and Simon Innes (Club Head Coach) presented the Bill McInnes Quaich to Alan on the night. The Blaze Quaich, or ‘cup of friendship’ will be presented for club volunteers in the future to celebrate commitment and service to the club.

Further awards were presented to each of our Squads and represented the continued commitment, improvement and team spirit of each team member.

Eoghann Dover (Senior Men’s Player, National player, U16M and U12 coach commenced the Player Awards with Coach Alan (U18M) and Coach Steve (U16M) for MVP, MIP, and Best Team Player for each of the squads.

Dave Paterson, former Boroughmuir Player and Internationalist gave a lovely tribute and memory of Bill McInnes from the days of travelling in a VW camper van to games in London, the games played against Real Madrid at Murrayfield ice rink and the success and contribution that Bill had with UK Basketball in the UK, Scotland and with Boroughmuir. During the evening, photos provided by Mel Capaldi (former Boroughmuir Player) indicated sponsorship by ‘Barrs Soft Drinks’, ‘Keds Trainers’ and gave us a greater understanding of the history of the club. The tribute ended with a standing ovation to the memory, success and dedication of Bill McInnes to UK Basketball.

Coach Steve Martz gave us an insight into the Blaze U16 Barcelona Tournament this year which coach Eoghann and Steve managed and following this success, Eoghann has already begun considering Blaze squads to attend in 2018.

Finally, our overall compere of the evening and annual ‘panto villain’ Grant Stott managed our Club Raffle that raised more money for the club which takes our fundraising to over £2000 since the summer, which is a result of all of our players, parents, coaches and volunteers (including fundraiser Sally Fowler) hard efforts. Our raffle prizes included some fine prizes from John Saunderson Butchers / Pilates Session (Maria Yvetes) / Narcissus Flower Arranging Workshop / Kinetic Chain Release – Progress Fitness UK / Aerial Yoga Voucher and a beauty voucher from Diana Hislop.

A big thanks to all our coaches, volunteers, parents and players who help in the continued growth and success of the club.

Go Blaze, Go!
